Easter Memories
I love Easter... everything that it represents. I marvel at the fact that Christ gave his life for us, cares for us so much that he took a painful journey to show how great his love is for us. I enjoy teaching my kids about this GREAT act and what it represents and means in their lives.
Each holiday we have a collection of Children's books that we peel from the bookshelf and place by the fireplace for night time reading.
For now the kids are young enough that we read these books below to help with the understanding of Easter. With the help of family and friends this collection of books continue to grow and it makes my heart smile knowing that for years and years the kids will remember the lessons taught inside. I wanted to share these with you in case you were looking for a meaningful teaching tool for your kids or Grand kids.
This first one we read on Palm Sunday. It is based from Luke 19:30-36 and tells a cute tale from the prospective of the colt. It's rhythmic and perfect for toddler to early grade school children. The illustrations are adorable and your small kiddos will love it.
This next book is great any time of the year, it has a bible reference on nearly every page. It teaches about patients, gratitude and forgiveness. This is a sweet parable of the true meaning of Easter and is one of my daughter's favorites.
I like this one because it has helped me transition a very secular marketing gimmick (Easter baskets) into a meaningful representation of what Christ did for us. It teaches what each of the colors in the basket represent and reminds us of His love. This way the kids can participate in the egg decorating and sweets without losing focus. Because it's a board book, it is appropriate for very young children, but the message behind it is ageless. It is based on John 11:25.
This last book is new to us this year. It is used along with the RESURRECTION EGGS which can be purchased or made at home. In each Easter egg there is an item representing a bible verse and story (in this book). This is appropriate for all ages, but seems to be geared toward kids a little bit older (school age). Each year they will come away with something new based on their ability to listen.
So this is the short list... there are more and I'm sure you have some you could share as well. I figure if we are going to read to our kids, it's nice to pick something with meaning. These kiddos are like sponges and we want them to soak up the good stuff at home. The world will offer them the other stuff. So, fill them up so they don't have room for the junk. Happy Easter!
